POLICE are hunting a knife-wielding betting shop robber.

The raider hit Ladbrokes on Wrekenton Row, Wrekenton, Gateshead, on Saturday at 4.45pm, armed with a 4-6in blade.

He demanded cash from the two staff before fleeing in the direction of The Ship public house at Eighton Banks.

There were two customers in the shop at the time and no one was hurt.

The man is described as around 5ft 6in, of slim to medium build. He wore a dark coat with a hood with a ski mask attached, dark trousers and shoes.

Police are studying CCTV footage of the incident and are appealing for the public's help.

The raid is the second at a Ladbrokes shop in days.

At around 6.50pm on Thursday a man brandishing a knife entered the shop on High Street, Gosforth, Newcastle, and demanded money from staff behind the counter before fleeing with a small amount of cash.

"We are keeping an open mind to see if they are connected and are looking to see if there are any commonalities," he said.
