LONG'S BACK WITH A BANG

Posted at 01:25 on 2010-May-7

St Helens 12

Hull FC 32

SEAN LONG admitted he was a bag of nerves before returning to a foggy Knowsley Road.

The scene had been set for Long the moment the fixtures came out, giving him a Hull debut at the club where he spent a trophy-laden 12 years.

And he followed his dream script to the letter, scoring a brilliant second half try and creating two others as Richard Agar's new-look side got off to a winning start.

Long said: "I was quite nervous before the game and had to hold it all in, because I didn't want the lads to know I was nervous.

Praise

"There was a lot of pressure on me coming back to Saints, but it was a lingerie wholesale great team performance." His new coached also heaped praise on the former Great Britain halfback.

Agar said: "It had to be didn't it? You could have written this before tonight.

"He's been doing this for a long time, and it was him who gave a talk this week telling the players to calm down before the game." With champions Leeds Rhinos also crashing at home to Castleford on Friday night, both of last year's Grand Finalists have already lost.

And Agar will now be hoping that his side can become one of a cluster of teams looking to seriously challenge the top two this year.

Saints were severely disrupted by first half injuries to threequarters Ade Gardner (ribs) and Sia Soliola (ankle), but coach Mick Potter refused to use them as an excuse. He said: "That was the least of our worries. I didn't think the guys handled that setback too badly.

"Sean didn't surprise me, because everyone knows how good he is.It was a good performance from him tonight, and I'm sure all his team-mates are happy."

Long enjoyed a mixed opening quarter as Saints dominated the field position, and even kicked out on the full at one point. But he soon warmed to the task and it was his brilliant flat pass that sent Willie Manu over for the opening try.

Ten minutes later giant Tongan forward Epalahame Lauaki powering over for his first try for the club, after flattening Leon Pryce on his way to the line.

Danny Tickle added two conversions and an early second half penalty replica hublot watches before helping to create Long's crowning moment.

Tickle bust the defensive line on halfway and flicked a brilliant pass out to the supporting Jordan Tansey. Richard Horne continued the move and then found Long, who sprinted away from the cover defence before producing a dramatic swan dive to score.

Thrilling

The veteran halfback was mobbed by his new team-mates, while the Hull faithful chanted joyously about 'walking in a Longy wonderland'.

It was game over when England winger Briscoe then raced 70 metres for a thrilling breakaway try to make it 26-0.

Clip on charms

And not even Tansey being sin binned, and Saints tries to Matt Gidley and Chris Flannery, could prevent this from being Long's night, as his little grubber set up Kirk Yeaman late on.

ST HELENS: Wellens, Gardner, Gidley, Soliola, Wheeler, Pryce Eastmond, Graham, Cunningham, Fozzard, Puletua, Flannery Wilkin. Reps: Roby, Moore, Clough, Fa'asavalu.

Long weekends ahead, Delhiites

Posted at 01:23 on 2010-May-7

NEW DELHI: For Delhiites who haven't had a real taste of winter this year, the desire for a white Christmas seems too hot to resist. Many of them are heading to the hills that have just experienced the first snowfall of replica tag heruer watches the season. With both Christmas and New Year falling on a Friday, they have the option of either two long weekends or 10 days at a stretch to go holidaying.

Gaurav and Abhilasha Gupta, a young couple who own a design studio, packed their bags and drove off to the hills as soon as they heard that Simla had experienced snowfall. ''Thankfully, we are self-employed and did not have to take leave from office,'' said Gaurav. ''We did not want to waste any time trying for train or bus tickets and just went by car. We have relatives staying there so accommodation was not an issue,'' he added.

Travel agents say that they have been getting several requests for bookings to the hills and they have had to refuse since hardly any tickets are available now. ''People replica breitling watches who head out with families normally plan winter vacations much in advance. Now, not only are train and air bookings full, there are no hotel rooms available in hill stations like Simla, Nainital and Manali. Srinagar seems to have become a hot favourite again this year and many people are travelling there. Among international destinations, Southeast Asia is still very popular,'' said Dev Darshan Rawat of Travel Boutique.

Many destinations also sport 'few tickets available' tags. ''My leave was sanctioned very late and when I went to get tickets for Goa, they were sold out. I tried HP next but even that seems completely booked,'' said Ashish Bhatnagar, a banker who is planning a holiday with his family.

Japanese TV commercial offends

Posted at 11:58 on 2010-Apr-30

SYDNEY, Feb. 15 Kyodo

A Japanese television commercial featuring pop diva Namie Amuro and a group of men performing an indigenous Maori dance has drawn criticism in New Zealand, the Australian Associated Press reported Monday.

The ad for Coke Zero involves a dance between Amuro and a group of actors dressed in rugby jerseys apparently doing the ceremonial ''Ka Mate Haka'' dance.

Te Ariki Wi Neera, a spokesman for the Ngati Toa tribe, the traditional custodians of the Ka Mate Haka, said the ad ''sounds like crap.''

Te Ariki Wi Neera earlier told the New Zealand Herald that the advertising agency had contacted the New Zealand Embassy in Japan to inquire about using the Ka Mate Haka.

''We told them if they wanted to use Ka Mate they needed to talk to us first,'' the Herald reported him as saying. ''They declined to engage when they saw we were serious about protecting it.''

The Ngati Toa is responsible for preventing the misappropriation and culturally inappropriate use of the indigenous dance.

The Ka Mate Haka is the most well-known due to the New Zealand All Blacks performing the dance ahead of rugby games.

The dance was formerly used ahead of battle, with the fierce postures and powerful lyrics thought to mentally and physically prepare the tribe for war.

According to the Herald, officials from both New Zealand Rugby Union and Coca-Cola Amatil will be making inquiries into the commercial this week.

DIAMANTI'S A SPARKLER

Posted at 11:27 on 2010-Apr-28

West Ham 2 Birmingham 0

GIANFRANCO ZOLA and his men celebrated as if they had clinched the title after a win that rammed David Sullivan's words down his throat.

Thomas sabo charms

The new West Ham owner had put more than a few noses out of joint in the Upton Park dressing room with his public declaration that the players and the manager needed to take a pay cut.

And although Zola denied afterwards that the words had stung, you only had to look at the way the Italian high-fived with his assistant Steve Clarke to see how much this victory meant.

Alessandro Diamanti's brilliant free-kick on the stroke of halftime and Carlton Cole's header after 67 minutes lifted West Ham out of the bottom three and up to 14th place.

It also inflicted only the second defeat of Birmingham's stunning 16-match run.

But Zola reined himself in afterwards to insist he would not be carrying on the war of words with Sullivan which has added extra bite to the Hammers' relegation fight.

He said: "It was just a celebration because we are going through a difficult moment and we want to stick together.

"There was no message other than that we want to stick together - players and staff.

He then added: "The chairman is entitled to his position but I want to be in a position where I can do my job well for the team. It belongs to the past.

"I am not a guy to take offence. I am not a guy who is touchy.

"I was just making a point. End of story. I am motivated and driven to do well for this team and that is the most important thing. That was my message."

As for the players' public vote of confidence in him, Zola added: "We care about this club and we want it to be successful. It was a good gesture and I appreciated it.

"What happened on Tuesday is in the past. It does not matter. The important thing is that we won. That is the most important message we send to everybody."

The win was West Ham's first of 2010 and their first in seven League matches stretching back to Boxing Day when they beat Portsmouth.

It is still far from enough - four wins at home in 25 matches and one away remains relegation form - but there appears a will within the squad to silence the doubters.

As for Sullivan, he will doubtless pour himself a large one and insist it was his kick up the players' collective jacksie that inspired the first win under his regime.

replica hublot watches

He'd been in a win-win situation. Had his old club Birmingham taken all three points then Sullivan would have claimed he was right that the players and the manager at his new club did not deserve their fat-cat salaries.

Expect to see him now do another round of television interviews insisting this result vindicated his decision to shake up the Upton Park dressing room out of their slumber.

To be fair, he does have a point. Maybe a bit of fire in their bellies was what they needed.

Diamanti scored after Scott Dann had fouled Scott Parker on the edge of the Birmingham box.

Cole netted midway through the second half from a fabulous cross by Julien Faubert.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish backed his players to come back from the defe

Why anorexia's about control

Posted at 12:46 on 2010-Apr-28

RECENTLY shocking figures came out in the UK revealing rising numbers of young people suffer mental health problems like eating disorders and self harm, writes Anya Snary.

Over the past decade more than 7,000 children have been admitted to hospital for self-harm.

And doctors have recently expressed concern that one in 250 young women females, and one in 2,000 young men suffer from anorexia with bulimia five times more commonplace.

Why is this happening? Due to these alarming statistics Public Health Minister Shona Robison said last replica hublot watches month that an extra Pounds 5.5m would be invested in mental health services by 2011-12 to help these types of cases.

Many say the media are to blame for making young people aim for perfection by losing weight. But is it? Sure, models are skinny - but they are not the main cause for eating disorders.

They are not always about appearance and weight - it can also be about control.

People most at risk are high achievers, those with a tendency for perfection and a strong desire to be socially accepted.

By dieting, some people gain a sense of control.

Often the eating disorder is a reaction to outside and inside influences such as stress, anxiety and unhappiness.

Self-harming has risen drastically in the past decade.

I spoke to young people who have experiences of these problems. Charlie, 19, told me: "It all started when I was seven, I started to cut my legs, then from that I took control of my life with my weight... I stopped eating and lost a lot of weight very quick.

"I was just very controlling around food, I felt ugly, fat, shameful, angry because everyone was telling me what to do. I felt like no one understood; I was frustrated as it felt it had nothing to do with anyone else!

"I felt everyone was watching when I ate."

In March 2006 for four months Charlie was admitted to Oakham House, a children's mental health hospital in Leicester.

"This had no structure to the day so I used to sleep most of the time and get up in the night," she told me.

replica tag heruer watches

"Each week I would go for a weigh in... I felt as if they were judging me. I felt very isolated and spent a lot of time with two staff to myself.

"Some staff were very supportive and easy to talk to however other staff didn't seem to understand mental health and were hostile - these were usually temporary staff. "Oakham House helped and stabilised me; then I was moved to a therapeutic community where I had three-and -a-half years of treatment. I am currently seeing a clinical psychologist."

Tasha, 17, was admitted to the unit when she was 14 because she was not attending school, not eating, and showing "suicidal tendencies" and was classed as a potential harm to herself and/or others.

"Now I know what it was," she said. "I suffer from Emetophobia - which is a fear of vomiting so this is the reason I didn't eat, severe depression/anxiety, and social phobia. "When I was first admitted they promised me I'd be there for four weeks tops. Actually I ended up being there for four months."

But she did not think her time there was altogether positive.

"You put a teenage girl into a room with a lot of other super skinny girls who

Sorcerer's apprentice Ally is

Posted at 12:34 on 2010-Apr-13

ALLY McCOIST kept up his unbeaten run as Rangers' Scottish Cup manager with a victory over St Mirren.

And it is that sort of experience that will make him the ideal man to take over the reins from Walter Smith when the time comes.

When a successful manager leaves a football club, it is always an unenviable task for the guy who follows in his footsteps. Let's face it, there aren't that many managers out there who have been as successful as Smith.

So it can be a daunting task for the person who comes in to take over. I suppose it would be the same at Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson decides enough is enough and wants to retire.

It can be tough filling the void left by someone with the experience of both of those men, and especially with the amount of success they have enjoyed. I'm sure there are a lot of experienced managers who would struggle to cope with that pressure.

Gucci Fake Handbags

But, in terms of the Rangers job, there is one guy who has a massive advantage and is better equipped than anyone else to handle that responsibility and that, in my opinion, is Ally McCoist.

It's widely accepted Ally will be the next manager of Rangers and, for me, he would be the best replacement when Walter finally decides he wants a quieter life.

So why, if he has never been a manager in his own right, do I say Coisty is the man for the job?

Well, he has worked side-by-side with Walter for several years and will have learned so much in that time.

Remember, they are with each other almost every day. They talk about football constantly, Ally will have watched how Walter operates in various circumstances, and that sort of experience is priceless.

At Rangers, being a good manager simply isn't enough. You have to understand the demands of the supporters, the Scottish game and so much more and Paul Le Guen is proof that being a good coach doesn't guarantee success.

Replica Patek Philippe Watch

Ally, in his role of assistant manager, will understand all of those things, and Walter has admitted he is grooming him to take over.

He is trying to pass on all his experience to Coisty so that he will cut it as a manager.

There are, of course, no guarantees. If he did take over and struggle to get results then he would eventually find himself out a job like anyone else. At Rangers, second isn't good enough. You are expected to win championships and trophies on a regular basis.

There is no getting away from the fact Coisty is a club legend, and the supporters worship the ground he walks on. There can't be too many more popular players than him down through the years. But that counts for nothing. It may buy you a little time to start with but after that it means very little.

However, what I can say about Ally is that he's a born winner. Honestly, he is the most focused and determined person I know, and when he talks about football you can tell how much it means to him.

He isn't a soft touch either. Yes, he can come across as a bit of a joker but in that dressing room it's a different story entirely. I'm sure there are a few Rangers players who probably know that to their cost already.

And another thing people have to understand about Ally is that Coisty isn't motivated by money.

If he

World number one O'Sullivan opened the match at Wembley Arena in 4-0, looking determined to give a lesson to former world champion Ebdon.

Ebdon still refused to surrender by pulling one back in 65-1, but the three time world champion O'Sullivan sealed the victory in 106- 32.

O'Sullivan, grabbing four titles at the most prestigious invitation event, came back from a 3-0 down to defeat Australian Neil Robertson 6-4 on Tuesday.

Defenders OK with photos

Posted at 12:03 on 2010-Mar-30

Senior Hamilton defence lawyers are comfortable about a police "name and shame" campaign to Fake Armani find 11 of the Waikato's most wanted men.

The front page of Saturday's Waikato Times featured photographs, names and ages of 11 men wanted for offences including indecent acts, burglary, theft and cannabis-related crimes. Police were this morning unable to confirm whether any of the men had been caught over the weekend.

Philip Morgan QC said the publication of the list, the photographs and the men's names appeared to be in the interests of community safety and he "had no objection to it".

"In each case there was an existing warrant to arrest, so there couldn't really be any major privacy issues," Mr Morgan said.

His only concern was that the "name and shame" campaign could hinder a right to a fair trial, "but it's most unlikely there's any real issue there", Mr Morgan said.

Roger Laybourn, another of Hamilton's prominent defence lawyers, echoed Mr Morgan's views, and believed the existing arrest warrants for the 11 men made it an appropriate measure for police to take.

"Overall, my reaction to it is positive. I believe when we've got people who have been convicted, and are Chopard Watches not complying with sentences, then the issues relating to civil liberties are significantly less," he said.

"But if I had an existing client whose guilt or otherwise hadn't been determined, then I would be unhappy, because the image cries out 'criminal'. Care has to be taken as to who is selected."

However, Mr Laybourn said he felt the "name and shame" type campaigns were a "medieval concept" not unlike putting people in stocks and throwing rotten fruit and vegetables at them. He noted that a suspect's rights could be undermined by excessive publicity before a hearing.

Michael Bott, a Wellington barrister who is the media spokesman for the Council For Civil Liberties, said the publication of the names and photographs could compromise a fair trial for any of the men pictured.

"But if there is a risk to the public, then obviously it makes sense to advise the public and warn them, and there are good grounds for it," he said.

"I'll give myself a couple of days off and then I'll be back in training to prepare for the fight."

Wood's mission

Posted at 10:23 on 2010-Mar-18

SHORTWOOD United will attempt to get back to winning ways in the Hellenic League Premier Division when they visit Wantage Town tomorrow.

John Evans' men, who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, are currently in fourth place in the table, 14 points behind leaders Reading Town.

Woodhead is 'loving it' up in

Posted at 10:23 on 2010-Mar-18

AMIDST the wreckage of a season that won't linger long in the memory, there has been one bright spot on the playing front down at Torquay Recreation Ground.

Torquay are fielding one of the youngest front rows in the club's history and it is more than holding its own.

Step forward John Woodhead (21), Tom Channon (19), Steve Smith (23) and Russ Morris (22) as the young men who have been doing the club proud.

Smith and Morris have been around for a while - Morris in a variety of positions - while hooker Channon started getting some 1st XV game time last season while still a colt.

Woodhead, son of former Torquay player Peter Woodhead, has been around for a couple of seasons, largely in the second row.

At 6ft 4ins tall Woodhead isn't the classic build for the front row, but switching him there has paid dividends for Torquay.

Mike McDonald, Torquay's director of rugby and an old front-row hand himself, said Woodhead has made the transformation from lock to prop in an outstanding manner.

"Our pack has been superb all season and that is one area where we have been dominating games," said McDonald.

"It has all come together in the front row now that John has gone up there as he has come on in leaps and bounds as a player.

"Alton Ozdemir, the scrum coach at Plymouth Albion, has come up and done some sessions with the front row. John has learned a lot from that.

"Tighthead is one of the hardest positions on the pitch to play in, yet he has adapted to it and is now getting his body angles right and putting the opposition under real pressure.

"When we first suggested playing John in the front row one or two people in the club were a bit sceptical. By the way he has played, John has made them eat their words."

Woodhead is loving every minute in the front row and thanked McDonald for pointing him in that direction.

"I made my debut in the 1st XV when I was a colt - Gloucester Spartans, away - and for the last couple of years since coming out of the colts I have been up and down between the 1st and 2nd XVs," said Woodhead.

"I have been relishing the experience of playing in the front row every week, although I wasn't too keen at first. Mike said I had a better chance of playing in the 1st XV if I went up there, so I gave it a go.

"It's a bit more physical than the second row, but I am loving it, even the cuts and bruises.

"Every match I learn something new. I am lucky to have some experienced guys like Ben Cole and Jon Arnold playing behind me, which helps."

SCRUM on down! That's what Kingsbridge said to the ladies of the club prior to the match against Newquay last Saturday.

The wives and girlfriends - dubbed the 'scrummies' by other club members were invited down to lunch before the match.

More than 70 of them tucked in and between them raised a hefty Pounds 750 for charity. The 'scrummies' support the Triangle Centre at the South Hams Hospital, which works with cancer patients and their families.

"We were able to almost double the amount raised last year - it was a great effort," said Kingsbridge secretary Martin Newman.
